The Bill Vinten GTC University Awards have taken place again this year, our 12th season. Last years’s winning University of Surrey, hosted the 2024 event. The winners were announced at the Awards presentation ceremony in Guildford on Wednesday 20 November. Twenty camera professionals judged the 23 films submitted from eight different universities.

There is always a high standard of drama’s in the competition and it’s exciting to see such confident and skilled students coming into our industry.
The winners not only received work experience with expenses but also membership to the GTC, which means that they’ll have access to advice from industry experts and manufacturers on our forum and website. The advice available isn’t just on operating issues either. There’s plenty of help on the more mundane but important issues such as insurance and legal matters, and they’ll be able to go to our workshops free of charge which are on an amazing variety of topics.

Coventry University
A strong and creative choice going with both a 4x3 aspect ratio and also choosing to keep the whole piece in monochrome. One of the judges commented, “by shooting in black and white it referenced back to the best of British documentary photography”. Another judge said, 'every shot was beautifully framed and the pictures conveyed the mood perfectly'. Whilst another judge commended the piece for “bold and adventurous camerawork” with several others all agreeing that it was “a class above everything else that was entered”

Wiltshire College & University Centre
The runner up’s film prompted one judge to comment, “good use of very tight shots and targeted lighting”, another said, “the feeling of claustrophobia was brilliantly conveyed”.

University of Portsmouth
In third place, a film that one judge said “the cinematography was definitely the film’s strongest point”. Another judge commented on, “the big challenge of a stately home was a brave choice”.
